As a freshman, Emilind was one of a few students who stepped forward to join our Almond Acres Charter Academy Site-Based pilot program as a High School Big. Over the next four years, she became a constant source of encouragement, leadership and support for her Little in the program. Whether mentoring her own matches or stepping in when another Big was absent, Emilind made sure every child felt valued and supported. Her final match became especially meaningful, developing into a lasting relationship that continues today with the support of the Little’s family. Throughout high school, Emilind balanced academics, athletics, and personal commitments while remaining dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of others. She embodied the spirit of service and became a role model for both her peers and the youth she mentored.

Today, Emilind’s journey has come full circle. After years of investing in younger youth, she is now receiving mentorship herself through a special Big Futures match, the first in SLO Bigs history to enroll a Little over the age of 18. Having achieved one of her major goals by enrolling at CSU San Marcos as a Criminal Justice student, Emilind shared that she was excited, but also looking for guidance as she navigated college and pursued her dream of becoming a DEA Agent. When SLO Bigs approached the Arroyo Grande Police Department in search of a mentor, Detective Elia Esparza immediately stepped forward. A dedicated law enforcement professional with more than a decade of experience and a former Big in our Bigs in Blue program, Elia understands firsthand the power of mentorship.

United by their passion for service and interest in law enforcement, Emilind and Elia have formed a meaningful partnership built on trust and shared purpose. Their match is a powerful reminder that mentorship does not end when a childhood does. Sometimes, those who spend years lifting others up need someone to help guide them toward their own dreams, and in that way, the cycle of mentorship continues.
