Celebrating National Mentoring Month in SLO County

separator

January is a very special month for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County, as it marks National Mentoring Month—a time to recognize the power of mentorship and its transformative impact on the lives of children and youth. This year, we’re celebrating with a series of events that highlight the importance of mentorship and honor the dedicated individuals who make our work possible.

Proclamation from the County Board of Supervisors:

To kick off the month, on January 9 we received a proclamation from the County Board of Supervisors acknowledging January as Mentoring Month in San Luis Obispo County. This official recognition is such an honor, and we’re so grateful for the Board’s support. They really understand the vital role that mentorship plays in the community and our commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of young individuals.

“The Healing Bridge: Mentoring’s Role in Healing From Trauma”:

On January 20, we’re hosting a special event titled “The Healing Bridge: Mentoring’s Role in Healing From Trauma.” This event will shed light on the therapeutic aspects of mentorship, emphasizing how positive relationships with mentors can play a crucial role in helping children and youth overcome trauma and adversity. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear inspiring stories, engage in discussions, and learn about the healing potential of mentorship. More information: https://www.slobigs.org/events/

Good Morning SLO featuring Caity McCardell:

We’re honored to have a presence at Good Morning SLO on January 25 when Interim Executive Director, Caity McCardell, known for her advocacy and dedication to youth development, will share insights into the impact of mentorship and discuss the importance of fostering meaningful connections within the community.

National Mentoring Month demonstrates our appreciation for our volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) in our programs. Whether they’re high school students in our Site-Based Program or adults in our Community-Based Program, our mentors invest their time, energy, and compassion to make a lasting impact on the lives of the youth they’re matched with. We appreciate the transformational benefits of their work, from boosting self-esteem and academic performance to providing a stable support system for children facing challenges.
