Big Success Stories
John is a six year old boy involved in our School-Based program. John’s mother, a single mom, enrolled him in the program because he often became easily frustrated and struggled with school behavior. She felt he needed more one-on-one interaction with someone who would be patient and consistent. We matched John with Big Brother Don in October. Don was a quiet High School Big who seemed to have a speech impediment, struggle with self-confidence, and had few friendships with his peers.
From the moment John and Don met, their connection and friendship was apparent. John loves Don and cannot wait to see him every week. His school behavior has improved and he is happy and carefree when he is with Don. But, John is not the only one to benefit. Don is now the Big Brother all the boys love to play around. Being a High School Big has significantly boosted Don’s self confidence.
Kate's mother enrolled her in our High School Bigs Program because she needed help being kind to others and getting along with her peers. Her school counselor described her as difficult and pointed out that her self-esteem was very low.
When Kate, age six, began attending High School Bigs in September, she did not follow directions, hit other children, yelled, and made inappropriate comments. We matched kate with her High School Big Juanita and have witnessed marked improvement in her behavior. Kate told us she is "good friends with Juanita" and is behaving better "because Juanita wants me to." Her school counselor reports her self-esteem has improved and she no longer acts out or causes problems with other children.
Mason and his mother came to Big Brothers Big Sisters because she felt he needed a positive male role model to look up to, talk to, and spend time with. Mason had never met his father and was having a difficult time adjusting to his mother's recent dating. Mason simply asked for a "Big Brother to have fun with."
We introduced Mason to his Big Brother Jacob about a year and a half ago. They enjoy hiking, surfing, and making pizza from scratch together. It was a very exciting and educational experience for Mason. Mason's mother once told us that "having Jacob in Mason's life is so great because he gets to be the guy and see what it is like to experience healthy guy experiences and go on adventures that he would not have had the chance to go on unless Jacob were in his life." Mason said "Jacob is wonderful...there are no problems. Thank you, thank you, thank you for matching me with this guy!"
