Julie Tizzano, owner of SLOCO Data and Printing, has spent the last 14 years volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters on the Central Coast.

She's already donated more than $20,000 in printing services to the program, but she wasn't done giving.

Paul Van Beurden and Dutchman's Seafood House on the Embarcadero in Morro Bay donated $1,080 to Big Brothers Big Sisters youth mentoring programs. The funds were raised as part of their grand re-opening party and will go toward providing mentors for local youth.

Ella Simonin, 3, donated her Christmas gift of $100 from her aunt, Kali Beard, to Big Brothers Big Sisters. 

Her brother, Kaleb, age 5, donated his gift to Woods Humane Society and brother Kyle, age 7 (not pictured) donated his to the Prado Day Center. 

“They have everything they need," the siblings' mother, Heidi Simonin, said. "My sister Kali suggested using this as an opportunity to teach sharing and giving to others.  It was really a wonderful experience.”

Law enforcement, probation and youth advocates in San Luis Obispo County are currently working to finalize a plan to address gangs in a proactive way.  A new study is under way to analyze the gang problems in San Luis Obispo County.

Paso Robles Press: What is the importance of prevention in solving the gang problems in the county?

Powers: If we can keep a young person out of a gang in the first place, we're going to save the taxpayer "for one 10-year career," in the juvenile justice system, between $800,000 and $1.2 million in managing that one individual...

...or mentoring for Big Brothers, Big Sisters – help them to get another case worker onboard. I could tell you a hundred ways to use the money. If we can keep those kids occupied and help them to make the right choices for life than we don't have to pay for all of those remedial kinds of things down the road including maybe a long time in prison, which costs us an incredible amount of money.

Brianna Boydstun remembers what it felt like to be paired up with a “big” when she was 7 years old.
For three years, Boydstun spent time with a college student who became “kind of like the big sister I never had,” she said this week. Her mentor took her on trips, including to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, listened to her and offered support.
